9月ポイントレース ケヴィン・ブレイ

9月のポイントレース(9/16)は、悪天候のため「的矢湾レース」を「五ケ所湾2周レース」に変更しました。
総合優勝は好調のローニンフールズ（ケヴィン・ブレイ艇長）です。
超訳（ｗ）は清水です。誤訳があれば失礼。

September races have been typically blustery due to seasonal factors like.... typhoons. So it was no surprise to arrive at the captains meeting a few hours before the race and hear that there had been a course change. The original race was scheduled to finish in Matoya Bay, but that was changed to twice around Gokasho bay. The layout of this new course presented different challenges.

We, Ronin Fools, got our J24 out on the water early...6:40 for an 8:00 start. Mainly to do our homework but also because I hadn't sailed in over a month and wanted to get my sea legs again. The air was light and from the east, which meant a beam start on our the north south course, with pin end favored. We had a good start but we got pinned to the outside and were caught in the wind shadow of both the mountains and Blue Sharks. My bad. As we toiled in dead air Venus, Asama, Kasumi, and Oasis shot down the committee boat end of to capture the first 4 spots. Blue Shark was 5th, Ronin Fools 6th :(( but our arch rival, Azure, was 8th... last :))).

Everyone rounded the top mark in that order. But the air turned heavy at the rounding and blew our over canvased under crewed boat to leeward. Azure took advantage and closed the distance to a mere five boat lengths. After hoisting and dropping the spin in hopes of catching the pack, Azure passed us. My bad, again not seeing beyond the end of my nose.

It is difficult to comment on the race as we were well behind to see anything of consequence. We did happen to witness Azure retiring from the race. The concern on our boat was limited to a “Zannen” which was uttered through fraudulent frowns of concern.

I think I can best sum up this race with the expression “shock and awe”. Not because we “completely and utterly dominated” the fleet through speed and maneuvering as per the common definition but rather the opposite. The “shock” was having made bad decision after bad decision, being unlucky, being beaten by everyone else on the course. I got back to port disappointed realizing I could have done so much better. The “awe” came a few days later when my partner in crime Dr. Katayama telephoned and told me that we had won.

The next race is in the confines of Gokasho bay, with ten points up for grabs. But the final race is an over night race for forty points... Azure and Asama are within reach of first. Gambatte!!

９月のレースは、毎度のように台風などの季節要因で荒れるので、レース数時間前の艇長会議で、コース変更するという結論になったことには別段驚かなかった。もともとのレースは的矢湾をフィニシュにするものだったが、五ケ所湾を２周するものに変わった。これはこれで違った意味での挑戦だった。

我々J24のローニンフールズは、08:00のスタートに対し06:40と早めに海面に出た。我々の宿題をするためとともに、私が1月余りヨットに乗ってなかったので、カンを取り戻すためだった。風は軽く、東から吹いており、北→南のコースに対しもってこいのアビームスタートだった。我々は良いスタートを切ったが、外側にくぎづけになってしまい、山とブルーシャークの影の無風地帯につかまってしまった。私の責任だ。無風地帯で苦労している間にヴィーナス、アサマ、カスミそしてオアシスはコミッティーボートを超え4つの好位置を占めてしまった。ブルーシャーク5位、ローニンフールズ6位（しかし最大のライバルであるアズは最下位の8位だった）
皆同じ順位でトップマークを回った。しかし回るとき風が強くなり我々の大きなセールで少ないクルーの船を風下へ運んだ。アズが有利になり５艇身ほどまで詰め寄ってきた。スピンを上げ下げしている間に、アズは我々を抜き去った。先を見なかった私のせいだ。

私は下位に居たのでレースがどのような展開になっているかを伝えるのは難しい。アズがリタイアするのは、たまたま見た。厳粛な気持ちで「残念」と言うより他ない。

このレースを総括すると「ショックと畏れ」というのが一番だろうと思う。レースを普通の意味で完璧にうまく運んだということではなく、むしろ逆のことだ。「ショック」は悪い判断や不運やレースの相手にやられた後の悪い判断をしたときのことだ。もっとうまくやれたのにと悩むことだ。「畏れ」は数日後、同罪の片山ドクターからのレース勝利の電話があったことだった。

次のレースは五ヶ所湾の範囲で、1着10ポイントだ。でも最後(11月)のレースはオーバーナイトの1着40ポイントのレースだ。アズやアサマが逆転1位射程圏内だ。「がんばって！」
