Feb Race Report. Kevin Blay

There were just four sloops in the February VOC race, due to a ski trip that was planned for the same weekend. They were Oasis 40', Azure 36', Kasumi 33' and Venus 24'. The conditions were overcast with intermittent gusts sending flourishes of white caps sweeping across the bay.
At the horn Azure lead the charge across the line, quickly followed by Oasis, Kasumi and Venus. After rounding the first mark chutes were hoisted by Azure and Venus. Oasis and Kasumi opted not to hoist for tactical purposes. On the downwind leg, courses diverged to seek advantage. The larger boats took the left side while Venus took a tactical risk by keeping to the shorter right side. The tactic paid off for Venus as she stormed back, her kite pulling her to snatch first from Azure. However, it was short lived as the wind shifted 180 degrees, forcing her to hoist her jib. Venus soon fell to the larger Azure and Oasis but was able to hold off a charge by Kasumi until rounding the second mark. By the third mark the line was set as the boats settled into their positions until the end. The order of finish on the water was Azure, Oasis, Kasumi and Venus. A little jostling in the order as time allotments were factored in, so the final placements were Azure, Venus, Oasis and Kasumi.

There was a great buffet after the race, with delicious sashimi topping the menu.
