6月ポイントレース

６月の優勝は先月に続きケビン・ブレイ艇長のローニンフールズでした。

The June race was a lot of fun, although it didn't start that way. The original race was suppose to be the Emerald Cup. An annual, 30 odd mile, race that runs along a fraction of the Mie coast. However, due to Poseidon's undulations, which peaked at 4m somewhere not too far away, the race was changed to a calmer Gokasho bay. It is a shame when people plan for races and then have the "gods" change their plans... Is that home cookin' I smell? But I digress...
There were nine boats that challenged for the.... Emerald cup / usual club race. The majority of the yachts hit the line at the horn. We, Ronin Fools, were in the minority along with Azuma. And as it turned out for us, being the second to last to round the weather mark helped immensely! Everyone was on parade tour, and with nothing to loose, Dr. Katayama thought it best not join the line. Instead we took the lee course of a faltering abeam wind and rode it past everyone. How or why this happened I have no idea, I just do as I am told. When I do make decisions they usually end up in... well let's just say I should have listened to reason. Although there are many cases in point, I'll tell of one.
We were in second, having watched Yellow Magic storm past most of the fleet on the breath of a breeze. Their gennaker destroying the competing genoas. Seeing this I let greed over take my judgement in a vain attempt to hold on to our position. I decided to climb half way across the course to catch their air. But we were undone. We followed Yellow Magic into a dead calm, and lost three positions trying to extricate ourselves from my foolishness.
The Melges is truly a wonderful boat. The manoeuvrability is phenomenal and in light air... extraordinary.

The J league comprised of Venus, Blue Shark Jr. and ourselves. I think Venus and Ronin Fools are somewhat predictable. in that we are conservative in our decisions. But Blue Shark Jr. was the speedmeister of the league. They whipped around the course in an Melges like fashion. They past Venus and myself dogmatically, albeit the dog was a whippet, but were caught in the tide as they rounded the Island and dropped two places.

After the final island mark, the race broke down into a dog leg right. The first part was downwind followed by a beam reach to the line. With spinakkers hoisted the J league and a rejuvenated Azuma, all marched like proud robins to the bend in the leg. Venus climbed right in search of clean air, as we were directly behind them. We took the vacated middle passage, while Blue Shark Jr. took the left side. Azuma began to climb up Ronin Fools tail but bore off to the left also taking the more direct route. Ronin Fools was leading at the bend and a clean sail change preserved preserved the placement to finish line.

It was a great race in the J league. Everyone had a chance to win the race, but luck carried Ronin Fools across the line ahead of the other two.

Lunch was also great. Thanks to the staff and everyone involved in making the race a success.

このレースには９隻のヨットが参加した。ほとんどの船が合図のときにスタートラインに並んだ。我々（ローニンフールズ）とアズマ（原文ママ）は例外だった。ウエザーマークを回るときビリから２番目だったけど、それが助けになった。皆は一列に並んでいた。そして失うもののない(クルーの)Dr.片山はその列に加わらないことを決めた。その代わり弱いアビームの風下のコースを取り、皆を抜いた。どのようにしてなにが起こったのか私には分からなかった、ただ言われたとおりにやっただけだった。なぜそうしたのか理由を聞いておくべきだったのかも…。色々な大事な点はあったかもしれないが、まず一つを伝えよう。
我々は風の中ダントツのイエローマジックを見ながらの２位だった。彼らのジェネーカーは競争相手のゼノアを打ち破っていた。これを見ながら私は空しく自分の位置を保ちながら、起死回生の秘策を練っていた。彼らの風をキャッチするべく風上に上がった。でもうまくいかなかった。イエローマジックに次いで無風に入ってしまい、自分のミスを回復しようと思ったけど、順位を３つ落としてしまった。メルゲス（イエローマジック）は本当にすごい船だ。操作性は並外れている、特に軽風では異常なほどだ。

Jリーグは、ヴィーナス、ブルーシャークJr.そして我々ローニンフールズで成り立っている。ヴィーナスとローニンフールズは動きが前もって分かる保守的な動きをする。それに比べてブルーシャークJr.はＪリーグのスピードマスターみたいだ。メルゲスと同じようにコースをぶっ飛んでいた。彼らはヴィーナスや私を、レース犬が走るように独断的に抜いていったが、島を回るとき潮に掴まり順位を２つ落としてしまった。

最後の島マークを回ったらコースは右にドッグレッグしている。最初はやや後ろからの風だった。Ｊリーグの船や復活した「アズマ（ママ）」はスピンをいっせいに上げ、誇り高く足を曲げた駒鳥のように行進した。ヴィーナスは右側のクリーンな風を受けようとして上り、我々はその後ろに付いた。我々はスペースの空いた真ん中のルートを通り、ブルーシャークJr．は左を通った。「アズマ」はローニンフールズの後ろに上り始めたが、直接的なルートを取るため下った。ローニンフールズは曲がり角ではリードをしておりきれいなセール交換はフィニシュの順位を保った。

Jリーグのレースは素晴らしかった。各自が優勝するチャンスがあった。しかし、幸運がローニンフールズを他の２艇より先にフィニシュさせた。

表彰式パーティのランチもまた素晴らしかった。このレースを成功させるために協力してもらったスタッフや関係者に感謝の意を捧げたい。
